Wow. Just wow.

Wow.

For an Evangellion clone it sure is good. Wow.

Anyway. RahXephon is a series not for the idiot. Or for those who think they know everything. If you don't find RahXephon good then you're either a complete idiot or ignorant/arrogant. Although, I have to say that some effort did go into me trying to understand it. I was lucky enough to be able to watch it in the american dubbed and with the traditional Japanese translations and to top it off, ADV films also threw in some awesome booklets with each dvd. I’m not entirely sure if most people would get those, but it really does help if you're not fluent in Japanese culture.

In short, there is this guy Ayato Kamina. Think of Shinji Ikari just with actually real live balls. And there are 2 worlds. One world is completely fabricated for a purpose. The other is the real world. Then there’s this old guy. Who made all this stuff. Then there’s this giant creature called RahXephon. And this creature tries to get Ayato to accept it. But it made a mistake. Since Ayato was Mu zapped back in Tokyo.

And that was my short description of RahXephon. 3 words for each episode. Its too complicated to bother explaining and I don't want to tell you about it just in case you're not smart enough to understand it. The entire anime is compromised of puzzles, switches and tricks to tell you what is going on. On one front you have your in the face story going on, but the real story is being told in the back ground. The real clues are not obvious. From the food and drinks each person has, to the clothes they wear, there are so many hints and clues that explain the whole world and if you don't pay attention to this fine detail you will no doubt suffer the stupidity effect: "RahXephon was crap" But I still have to say, if you watched it once and you left lacking, watch it again and pay attention to the little things going on, not to the main focus. So many things in this anime has backwards explanation which is why many people don't like it very much. For example, why does Kim go insane at Ayato when Sou gets killed by him? About 5-6 episodes earlier hints were being given that Kim was pregnant. Oh and one more thing about paying attention, RahXephon is about the music. The arias from each Dolem is identifiable to another aspect in the series. Each Dolem represents something, like, one of those anime emotion super power fun loving happy time things.

Story and structure aside, RahXephon was very pleasing to watch. The art work was very refined and followed a much more serious structure towards the whole basis of the culture it was worked around. You can actually tell who is Japanese and who is not. Not to mention they made some very attractive characters. They put effort in to make them visual appealing but not to fire up the whole female audience in pro feminism rages. Action scenes were nice and pretty, but short and few. I understand that effort was put in to stretch the value of everything going on, but there wasn't enough giant killing giant action. Some of the music also made such scenes very exhilarating, but as I said, they didn't last long enough.

RahXephon was good. I liked it a lot. But even taking up so much of the possible information I could, even from external sources, I was stilled left lacking and asking many questions. How the hell did Lord Bahbem create the Mu in the first place? For that matter how the hell does he manage to switch bodies? Hell, how did he even kill his own creator? Hmm. Seems all my questions revolve around Lord Bahbem. And why the hell did he want to ... I'm going to spoil stuff here. And why the hell doesn't Quon age? If she doesn't age then how come her qualifications came when she was .. OH! I get this one now.

I’ve heard there is a movie to accompany this, some sources say its good others call it complete rubbish. I don't know what to think. But I am DEFANTLY keeping an eye out for it. RahXephon is a thinkers anime. Defantly not for the simple minded. Oh, and this is more a personal mark to my friends who all said it was crap. I bet none of you watched the credits of the last episode.

My score (50 is the middle mark for average - 0 Not worth it - 100 I shat myself.):
Artwork: 90
Music: 85
Story: 75
Ending: 75
Overall: 80
