I went and watched this a second time after I decided to start writing this extremely critical reviews. Mainly because its one of those anime that you CAN watch again and still enjoy it.
Its quite a long series, 51 episodes. I also hear there is a movie yet I am yet to see it. I assume it takes place after the series so I am not worried. Its a long series so I'm going to skip most of the story, also because its a good story and I want you to see it for yourself.
The series starts off with a mid pointer. One of those episodes that sets the scene by taking a piece from the middle of the story. Then it starts by explaining what is going on. There are 2 boys and their mother. And their mother dies. And they try to resurrect her with this special science called alchemy. Alchemy is this special sort of skill where you can change something into something else, as long as the something else is made up of the same substance. Its called transmuting. And human transmuting is supposedly "taboo." But hey, what do a couple of 11-12 year old boys know about that. So BAM! They try to transmute their mother and all hell breaks loose. Ed, the older brother, loses his leg and Al, the younger brother, well... loses everything. When Ed comes back to life he desperatly tries to affix Als soul to a suit of armour in order to keep him alive. And that costs Ed an arm.
And thus the story goes on. They both quest to retrieve their normal bodies back. The then learn of a great library that may have the information that can help them do this. The problem is in order to gain access to this library, they have to become a State Alchemist. A military position of great power. So they get on their way and Ed becomes a state alchemist. Eventually along their journey they learn of a stone that can transmute stuff out of nothing. Its at this point my hate of americans morphed language gets me the most because I don't know if the stone is called the philosophers stone or the sorcerers stone. Anyway, they then end up trying to gain this stone. And lots of overboard stuff ends up happening. There is so much to this story that I'm not even going to bother mentioning anymore. And you have to see it yourself. Its just stunning.
The entire story revolves around a fair amount of twists. And although lots of twists may sound lame, its put together really well. I mean, what else would you expect from the Trigun team. The entire series just flows so well. Although there are some points that kind of drone on and can be a bit boring, but nothing like you'll see in Evangellion so its bearable. It may be to just try and drag some points on a bit, or maybe I just cant be stuffed listening to a bunch of wooses drone on about nothing.
All the characters in FMA are portrayed very well. There is a lot of effort put into setting each character and you cant help be become attached to many of them. Its also quite sad to see some of the characters die. But there are a few you just wish would die already. Like the 2 Ishbal kids. You'll understand.
FMA is a great anime, but like I said before, what else would you except from the creators of Trigun.
