Traffic Lights and YOU

This has been bothering me for a long time.

Every day I see things like this and it makes me cringe each time to think, that if every one stopped being a moron and drove normally I would get more time to do things at home with my family, spend less fuel by sitting in traffic, and not get angry constantly at stupid drivers, thus increasing my chance of a heart attack, thus causing me to crash into a cafe full of people thus killing them all. And it will be all YOUR fault.

When you drive slowly, over cautiously, or neglectfully, you cause traffic. You cause accidents. You will cause me to have a heart attack and kill an innocent mother who is giving her 5 year old kid a sugar drink at the cafe, which in turn will promote diabetes in his system when he gets older. So maybe you're doing him a favour, but I LIKED that cafe. Regardless, the main point of this piece is to educate you in traffic lights.

And by educate I mean scream at you and show you an animation I made because I can never explain things properly.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR TIME CROSSING INTERSECTIONS THAT HAVE LIGHTS!

When the light is green, you go, and you go like there’s no tomorrow. You drive your car like you need to get home in time for your wife to give birth. You drive like there is an avalanche of snow behind you. Of course, I don’t mean this literally. Doing so will probably cause you to ram the car in front of you. But, think of this: If they were driving to get away from the same avalanche, they would be going the same, or close enough to, speed as you. They also would be going faster, and you would be going faster, thus you wouldn't collide with them. If you take your time getting across an intersection, you cause people behind you to get stuck at the lights when they turn red. This is called, traffic.

Watch this animation. Watch each section once. It repeats itself, so don’t worry about the rest. And pay attention to the last one.

Cars who drive slowly
The first animation depicts the FIRST driver going slow. The cars behind him keep up speed, but they can NOT go faster than the first person. Thus, they all must drive slowly. This allows only 3 of our 6 cars in waiting to get through. If traffic was constant, only 3 cars would go through every minute. This means 120 cars could cross within an hour.

Cars who drives spaced
People who are too cautious or too stupid sit in the same category as the slow driver. The car in front of them is way ahead and they do not follow it, thus creating backlog, just like the slow driver. In this scenario, if every one spaced, but picked up speed eventually, 120 cars to the hour would cross.

Cars who drive slowly and spaced out
People do it. And it drives me INSANE. I spend so much time stuck at lights and in the city because of people like this. They drive slowly, and over cautiously. These people take FOREVER to get across an intersection, thus preventing the people behind them from crossing also. In this scenario two grandmas lead the pack and only THEY get across, leaving every one else behind them stranded. Only 60 cars get across per hour if every one drove like this.

Cars who drive normally
You match the speed of the car in front of you, the car in front of you isn't doing the walking speed and you keep up distance. This is GOOD traffic behavior for EVERYTHING. Not just lights. In this scenario there are 6 cars lined up. There could be more, but we will estimate that 6 cars usually line up here. 240 cars would cross per hour.

60 cars vs 240 cars
If a city has 1000 cars in it that need to get out. And there are 4 intersections at each side of the city. North, east, south, west. Now, most cities have hundreds of exiting intersections, but this is our PRETEND city, which is only a tiny model of a real city. Each intersection is just like ours above, and clicks over every 1 minute. All 1000 cars divide to each intersection. So, 250 per intersection. It's 5pm now.  Home time for our city goers. 1000 cars fill the streets. On the first day, every one catches the "Retarded Driver" disease (most likely from a Victoria police advertisement) and decides they want to drive slowly, and spaciously. 250 people need to get out from an intersection. 40 cars get passed in an hour. The city would be full of cars for 4 hours. FOUR HOURS of back to back traffic.

If the next day, our 1000 city drivers realised that vicroads and the Victoria police are a bunch of spastic mongoloids and decide to drive NORMALY on their way home from work. our 1000 cars would fill the city, they would go into the direction of the 4 intersections, 250 cars lined up, it would take 1 hour for the city to clear.

YOU make the traffic
People make the traffic. There are other things to consider, accidents, construction, popular events. But with ALL of these things, if you drive normally and don’t stop to check out an accident, traffic would flow MORE. YOU, the driver, in your shitty little shit house shit mobile of a useless car, who drives so slow, are to blame. And traffic lights is the starting point.
